In 1999, my then-girlfriend lost her mother to a degenerative illness, and the long, complicated grief that followed turned out to play a large role in defining the shape of our entire subsequent relationship and marriage. We were in our young 20s and didn't realize how profoundly this grief could impact our collective mental health as a couple. I wonder who else out there might have similar experiences to share.
