"Thank you, Diane. I wish none of us had to be here, but I'm glad this place exists. I'm sorry that you lost Rich. Twenty-five years is a long time. Certain times of year are harder for me. May is when Ron died, the day after his birthday.…"

"Hello, It's wonderful to read about these feathers and how you are staying connected to the ones you lost. I'm new to this group but not new to losing a precious spouse. It's been twelve years now, and that is almost…"

Trying this again

I've had a lot more healing to do since 2014, when I first found Legacy Connect. I've been busy working with other survivors of suicide loss, writing about survival, connection, and hope and creating/updating the website that is right for me.Now seems like the time to come back here. I still miss my husband, who ended his life in 2007 after a valiant battle with depression and bipolar disorder. We were married for over thirty years. But he is still part of my life. He made that kind of impact…See More

Finding Footing

Joining an online community of like-minded people reminds me of those first moments of hope I discovered after my husband's suicide. Any light shines brightly in the darkness of grief, and while finding one brings a flush of wonder and appreciation, it also brings a feeling of being a little off-balance.

Finding my footing here at LegacyConnect may take some time, especially as I learn to use this specific technology platform, but I am honored to be among you.

I've met some of you before through your books and articles.  A huge part of my own healing after the suicide of my beloved husband came from connecting with other survivors.  I hope my experiences and the insights I share will be of value to this community.  I know what I find here will help me.

Jan McDaniel writes about survival, reconnection, and hope in her blogs, articles, columns, and books. Her most recent books are Hope in the Aftermath of Suicide and Lost and Found: Rebuilding Your Life After Loss

Pre-mourning and Borrowed Hope

Posted on February 25, 2014 at 8:39am 0 Comments

Sometimes death comes without warning, but at other times there is a period of pre-mourning.  For almost a decade before my husband’s suicide, he dealt with active Bipolar Disorder. His rapid cycling and bizarre episodes left us both drained.  He was at the mercy of his illness, and as I tried to help him and get help for him in every way I could, I was at the mercy of his illness as well.

This pre-mourning leaves us few resources with which to cope with grief.  Physically, I had used…
