Hello there!
I am Karen L Goldman MA LMHC, a bereavement counselor and licensed mental health therapist on Staten Island and the Bereavement Coordinator at SI University Hospice. Please know that there is help in the SI community for grieving individuals and families......Legacy Connect is a beautiful service for family members to share their stories with their loved ones. "Rituals" as they are called, are a common way to remember our deceased love ones. As a bereavement counselor, I often teach my clients how to celebrate our loved one's by creating such rituals as scrap booking. Scrap booking is a great outlet and a compassionate way to include children and the whole family in our rituals. Children often remind adults that we should be amongst the living and letting the child inside of all of us come out at times. Scrap booking with our children is a wonderful way to express the creative, playful child within! This can also be very cathartic for us. Other rituals I often suggest to my grieving clients are, lighting candles on birthdays or anniversaries, continuing to celebrate holidays or special events the way that our loved ones would have wanted us to, writing letters to the deceased or journaling and even creating new memories together to memorialize our loved ones in our own special way.
