My Dad - Gil - May 1, 1930 ~ November 5, 2009
My Mom - Margaret - September 12, 1932 ~ February 20, 2010
My Dad was a very active 79 year old. He worked full time as
a Wal Mart greeter. He retired after close to 60 years in the grocery
business. He loved the interaction with people. In the Spring
of 2009 he had some mini strokes. He was left mobile, but with some speech
impediments. In July of 09 he fell in the bathroom and broke 5 ribs.
He never came home. Slowly he went down and down. Because of
his suffering and limitations in the end, he could not walk, he could not
move his arms.... his passing was easier on me than my Mother.
I wanted him at peace and the only way was to be HOME with our Lord.
In January of 2010 Mom was the the Veteran's administration doing
the last of my Dad's paperwork. Here in Ohio the day was cold, but
dry and sunny. Coming out of the government building, an area
of the sidewalk was raised due to the weather. This area was not
marked. Mom caught her foot and fell. She had a serious brain injury
and was life flighted to the hospital. I received a call from the security
guard telling me of her fall and her condition. She did not lose
consciousness, and so was able to relate my phone number.
Mom had bleeding in her brain, but no brain damage. We knew it was
going to be a long road back, just due to the time frame she was in
the hospital. She was released to her home though. She had family
and friends staying with her 24-7 for the first few weeks. She still
had pain in her head from where the bleed had not reabsorbed.
The neurosurgeon recommended she have brain surgery. On Feb 4th
she had 1 brain surgery, and 1 week later she had a second.
She fought and fought so hard. She actually was released from the
hospital a second time on Feb 17th. Again, released to her home
with family with her. On the 18th she collapsed. My sister in law
did CPR and Mom was revived. At that 1st hospital she was intebated
with a breathing tube. They TOLD us she was not really conscious.
I was at her side holding her hand. We could see her making slight
movements with her shoulders. While holding her hand I told her...
'Mom, Mikie is here, BethAnn is here, I am here... We LOVE YOU MOM'.
* SHE SQUEEZED MY HAND * It was light, but it was with purpose...
She knew we were there.
She was then life flighted back to the main hospital.
My brother and SIL and myself arrived at that hospital. The nurse
in ICU was taking the incoming info from us. We heard a code blue called.
I said to the nurse ... 'Was that my Mom' ? She had no way of knowing,
BUT I KNEW !!!!!!!!!!!!!! They told us Mom would need to be
cooled down and placed in a medical coma. Then in 24 hours they
could slowly bring her out and evaluate her.
Mom was 95% brain dead. Peacefully we followed previously
stated wishes and disconnected the life support.
Her heart peacefully stopped.
Mom was an active 77 year old. She was the driver for her bingo
friends. She bought a new car in early January and had a bingo
bus trip planned for that March. She was ready to take on the world
after my Dad's death. Supported by my 2 brothers and their families and
myself and family. She was grandma to 11.
See you both on the other side. Thank you for the continued and
on going messages you send. I know you are with us and not all
that far away. I truly know a Mother's love does not end with death.
Love Always,
Debra
