Hi everyone, I am 21 years old and I lost my dad about 4 weeks ago.  He was only 59 years old.  For 6 years he suffered from renal failure and congestive heart failure due to congenital problems.  I keep thinking about him because he was such a great person.  He always put the family before himself, which makes me sad because he never had time for himself.  He worked 12 to 16 hour shifts at the hospital until the end because he said he needed to support my autistic brother.  He never had time to rest.  I find it difficult to talk about his death with family or friends because none of them have experienced death or seen their parents deteriorate physically at my age.  I think it's hard losing my dad at this age because he will never see me get my college diploma, will never see me work as a nurse, and won't be there if I ever get married.  I realize that I would have spent less than half my life with my dad if I do live long.  I also realized that he did not get to know me as well because he only got to get to know my teenage self.  He would never get to meet the adult self that I am starting to become.

How do you guys deal with the death of a parent?  Also, can you guys please tell me about your experiences with your parents' deaths?  This site is great because it is so hard for me to talk about this subject.

I'm 38 and lost my mom to colon Cancer sept 2013 and I'm still dealing with it. I go to therapy once a week. She suffered for a long time as well and bed bound for two years before she passed. It's hard to watch a parent wither away and people don't understand so it is really hard to talk to others about it.
