My husband wrote a simple will naming me as executor. He got information on how to write a legal will in Texas and followed the instructions. He did not need a lawyer to do this. When I tried to execute the will, I needed Letters Testamentary from the court and was told that I would have to hire a lawyer to get them. This was a modest estate and all I wanted to do was sell a car. I had to pay a lawyer to fill out standard paperwork and appear with me before a judge to confirm simple facts. It cost over $1,500.00 and I don't understand why I had to hire a lawyer when I could have typed up the form and appeared by myself.
