Encouraging Thoughts through Song

A word spoken at a right time

How comforting to hear!

We hear these words of consolation

From friends so faithful and so dear

We seek to strengthen one another

And help each on his burden bear...

-Hebrews 10:24, 25

Depression

Working in the medical field, I see many things. The depression is on the rise and it's related to stress, post trauma or just a chemical imbalance.. It's sad because when not treated they end up completing suicide. I read about it the local news. We all read about it. It is happening to our friends and our families.

Even Jesus said " It you are sick go to a physician." (Matthew 9:12) Many folks do not do something until its too late. Recognize depression and confide in someone.…

Reflections on Loss

My mother was a wise woman. She always said, “Something good comes out of everything.”

How she could come to that conclusion following my father’s death was puzzling. My mom was only 46 when she was widowed with four children. She raised us and sent us to college during an era when women did not work outside the home, and…

Healing through research.

My name is Veronica Droser and I am from Boston, Massachusetts. In January 2011 my dad passed away very suddenly. He had a heart attack in our basement on the morning I was due to start work at my new job. My family has a motto which is “there are no problems, only solutions,” and therefore I have used my experience with my dad’s death as a…

Holiday Gifts for the Bereaved

What’s not to like about the holidays? The vibrant colors, favorite foods, visits with loved ones, opportunities to reminisce, and wonderful smells of the season. Holidays are full of tradition, packed with memories, and bring so much pleasure. For all these reasons, holidays can be a minefield for the bereaved, leaving them feeling sad, left out, and lonely.

Is there…

Can You Bury Your Pet With You After You Die? It's Possible

Q. My elderly uncle, who is ailing, wants to be buried with his dog in his cemetery plot. Is this common with pet owners — and is it possible? I thought that animals had to go to pet cemeteries.

Usually, animals are indeed consigned to pet cemeteries, where their owners have long…

Belated Sympathy Notes - Two Perspectives

For whatever reason, you never wrote a sympathy note. Is it OK to write one now, three, six, or 12 months late?

My perspective on belated condolences shifted when a bereaved spouse shared, “The bereaved never ‘get over’ missing their loved ones, and they…

Workplace Loss – How You Can Help in Troubling Times

A team of contractors was shocked to learn that the team’s government manager was injured in a car accident. The news was grim, and the contractors did nothing at first, not knowing whether he would survive his spinal cord injuries. One of the team members asked, “What if we send his wife a card and he dies? Will we be making the…

Love Ones Personal Wishes

Most funerals I have been to have been very dignified. Why? This is because everything was laid out as the deceased desired.

I remember when I was younger folks fought over who should take what flowers... I felt awkward.

It's wisdom it putting things in writing. That way the family will not fight over things... House? Car? Bills?....

Why Do We Hold Back From Telling Our Love Ones We Are Sick ? : Do They Understand?

I had a good friend that I noticed that she was losing a lot of weight. She would say my stomach hurt....She would go to the doctor and never really tell us what was going on.....She died..

I am more determined now to get involved in my good friends lives...A few months ago I accompanied one of my other friends to the emergency room... The staff were throwing out all types of medical terms. I told the doctor to speak clearly and explain in simpler terms what was going on (Not sure she…

When End is Near

 Read something interesting about Hospice

1) Keep bed sheets clean

2) Change position frequently to prevent bed sores

3) Change undergarment or diapers if needed

4) Keep the mouth moist with wet swabs or ice chips/lip balm

5) Hold our love ones hand and remember the last thing to go is their hearing

Missing my brother

Today marks my brothers 3rd anniversary. I miss him everyday. Since then I found out how he really passed. It upsets me even more, but there's nothing I can do about it now. I've always been there to protect him and the one time he needed me I wasn't there. I'm guesssing we will never know what happened that night, but I have an idea. Looking back on that night and day at the hospital seeing how his girlfriend acted made me think. She got real angry at me when she asked for his apartment key. I… Continue

An Inspiring Legacy

A friend in her early 30s was deeply affected by the recent death of former Israeli President Shimon Peres. She was unfamiliar with Peres until she read his obituary and learned his life story. She shared that she was unaware that Peres had tried to broker peace in the Middle East.…

Remembering Life and Death

Last month,

My family engaged in a group text regarding remembering those that month that died in our family... I believe it was actually the anniversary of 2 love ones.... So the texts started off depressing.. Then my sister turned it around and said ...."let's also remember the wonderful life that came in the world today"... Let's celebrate them and the birth of a new baby in our family....Let's remember precious memories of the dead and alive.... I thank my sis for making us…

Common Denominator - Loss of Love Ones

Although many of us have different belief systems, we have one thing in common- death. It is our enemy. I love to have comfort from friends and family but I get the greatest comfort from the wonderful promises in God's word the Bible. I can't wait to the time when God will do away with death and pain. In addition to all the suffering and injustice....No politician( or any other human being) can do away with death but God can and he will....

Lost younger brother

Hi,

I lost my brother end of August this year.  I am the eldest.  He thought he had the flu, went to walk n clinic, still verifying this and died a day later, alone in his own bed.  My parents are in shock.  I have a younger sister.  I started a new temp job couple of weeks before he passed.  I'm struggling with his passing and generally with all of this.  I am also angry with him for his lack of care and follow up.  He tried to work through his flu but had a temperature of 104.  Not…

Grief Following a Long Goodbye

It’s difficult to witness the physical and mental decline of a friend or loved one with a debilitating illness. In fact, it’s hard not to grieve while they are still alive, as responsibilities and relationships shift and lives change. Some might think that death would be a relief and grief shortened, but that’s not often the case.…
